Cat & Boy

    1. Funnily enough, these are. I have all kinds of crazy conversations in my head. When Babe wrote this, I had to wonder if she’d been peering into my mind while I was asleep or something! 😛

      1. They reinforce things as they are – which is often fine, and often laudable (even the best buildings need maintenance), but becomes a problem quite often, especially since there is no pure repetition: keeping things the same, or reinforcing the status quo qua status quo, means one is not paying attention to the drift into difference.

Inattention does not seem to be ever an option in your comics, though. They sometimes seem like slightly-knotty aphorisms that require attention to unpack, but carry an actual yield.

        1. Gregory, I have to confess that it has always been my goal to make the reader do some of the work in terms of the meaning they can derive from my comics. So, yes, I think you summed it up quite nicely there. And it’s a very kind and generous thing of you to say! 🙂

  1. “My existence is like a wound…I pick at the scab, bits gathered under my fingernails.” This like was stunning in particular ! As always such a great reflection of inner fears and battles, this was. Marvelous work Tony! 🙂

    1. No, I haven’t but I have seen a 1994 German animated film about cats called Felidae. Le Chat du Rabbin looks to be a far more pleasant and less nightmarish affair. I love the idea of a cat that can speak after having swallowed a parrot! 😛

  2. I so very much enjoyed this exchange – as someone who now has four cats – and the humor and the art. I wish our cats would speak to me more. Usually when I call to them they like to pretend I don’t exist.

    1. My friend, you ARE a contender. Completely! It’s the colours of your work that really draws me in. You seem to be able to make the white spaces work just as well as the colours in the mix. I don’t know how you have the confidence to do that. I don’t possess that confidence.

      1. ….easy…don’t be confident…be obsessive!…(thank you Tony…your stuff is so together…so considered…mine is…well…is kinda “Pigpen”….as always – I remain in awe of your ability….keep doing it…as much as you can)….

  3. Puzzled by the building at the end. I want to call it a cat house but it looks like a prison. Is the bar in the prison-like building? Is the building a metaphor? Oh my head! Such intrigue! Love all the funny touches in the pictures like Murphy’s law and the mounted fish on the wall, the ship in the bottle and the Spam. Your art always makes me pay attention.

    1. Aw, thanks, Susanne! You made my day! As for the building, it’s nothing so sinister. Just a pub by the sea. Granted, the context of the strip doesn’t make that super clear so I’ll have to be more aware of that next time. 😛

    1. I’m well pleased that you like the expressions, Fraggle. That has always been my favourite part of drawing these things. I love making the reader feel like my characters actually possess an inner life that’s rich with complication. 😀

  4. My existence is a scab
With bits under my finger nails
What genius a talking cat that drinks and talks
Not knowing more than what it read
And the guy is shit faced without a drink
Every Tuesday,do you want the phone number
It felt like I was there
    Great piece
