Meanwhile, Churchies!

        1. You’re quite right to say this. I honestly have had so much on my plate that I simply haven’t been able to get around to expanding on what happened here, let alone do another CC strip. I intend to make 2020 the year that I wrap up Crumble Cult for good. Hopefully, I can actually make that come to pass, and also offer Ernest’s tale the resolution it needs.

      1. Yes, indeed I am. You are so skilled at producing comics. Besides, humor is great in our current dark times. If you had a bad day this little story of yours certainly cheers me up. Yea!

  2. Well done, Tony. I loved this. I also admire your artistic flair. I am a frustrated artist. I am very thankful that photography has given me a visual means of expression and capturing the moment.
    Bless you!

      1. Thanks very much, Tony.
I was very lucky to get some very good and personalised training from a friend of mine who was an ABC cameraman and taught me so much about light and striking at the right times of day. That really helped and I am an addict.

      1. You have no idea! Actually, one of the ones right here…healing ministry nonsense…ugh! Makes me insane. This could be a long conversation 🙂
(As for hypocrites, well I’m one of those, like everyone. ;))

        1. ‘Healing’ ministries really do make my blood boil, I must say. Yes, I imagine you and I would have a LOT to talk about in this whole general area. (You can count me as one of the biggest hypocrites around, so I’m with you on that.) 🙂

            1. If I may be so rude as to ask (hopefully I’m not being rude), does this make for interesting conversations with hubby? Or does he have a similar outlook to you? 😛 (You absolutely do NOT have to answer this by the way.)

              1. No, you are not being rude. And yes, we have great conversations. We are very like minded spiritually, he gets just as angered by the healing nonsense, and other fraudulent behaviour, as I do.

        2. Oh PS I did end up writing a short ode to auto correct…I was going to put your name in there but then I thought you might hate it haha and how embarrassing would that be?

  3. OMG! I loooovvveee this! As someone with a former background in deep rooted faith I will tell you how much the hypocrisy kills me and has driven me from church. This is amazing, lol! 😉 xx

    1. Isn’t it astonishing the number of ex-churchies there are out there? On the one hand, it makes me sad that so many of us went through this nonsense. On the other hand, I’m kind of glad I’m not in this alone. I’m glad you liked this! I wasn’t entirely sure how it would be received. With open arms, preferably, so… yay me? 😛

          1. Spirituality is the basis of our beliefs. If we didn’t have a belief system we wouldn’t behave in a spiritual way.

Sadly, in this comic you’ve stereotyped Christians.
I went to Catholic schools (I’m still in recovery). I’ve never met a nice nun. I passed one today at the store and felt like a child again, never good enough, constantly with a ruler on my knuckles, constantly a pinched nerve on my shoulder or pulling my ear. Not a good day in those schools. My experience says there are no good nuns but I know that can’t be right because a blanket label for them is called bias and prejudice.

I have an Aunt who is a dang on holly roller. I’ve said I’m a hairs breadth from hating her. She has scared me with her religion since I was little and I can’t stand to hear her voice now. Is everyone in her religion as crazy as she is, probably but I do not need to free myself from her insanity and the insanity of most churches by mocking and publicly denouncing religion. What you end up doing is forgetting the real reason you’re disgusted. You end up just playing to the crowd.

I don’t need you to be Christian or ‘believe’ I don’t need you to be an atheist or need you to state your belief system. That’s not my business to know. I can see you are angry at God for not helping you as a child or now. I can see you are angry at religion because of the way they behave. I can see that you are lashing out because you see the hypocrisy of Christmas. I believe your cartoon would be more poignant, authentic, if you’d found a way to say those things instead of making a fool out of the holy roller girl. How did you accomplish freedom from religion by doing exactly what they did to you? I would not expect your cartoon to be politically correct but authentic, yeah, I’ve come to expect that standard from you because you’ve shown it repeatedly. Your comic is leaps above others I’ve been attached to.

Authenticity is why I like your comic and podcasts, but I’m afraid this time the message got lost, then found in the company of millions of other comics who haven’t stated their truth but instead gave us … this.

            1. Faith, thank you for sharing your thoughts on my latest strip. I know it takes time to write something of this length.

As for your claim that I’ve stereotyped Christians, I think that’s a fair call. This is how you see it, and who am I to tell you otherwise? However, I had a specific purpose in portraying Brydie in the way that I have, and she’s been consistently portrayed like this since her very first appearance. You may even have noticed that I’ve consistently portrayed her atheistic counterpart Onslowe in a similarly unflattering light. Basically, their characters are a representation of the narrow values of fundamentalism within religious and non-religious circles, and how these so-called values can warp even the most well meaning of people.

I take no pleasure in the fact that this strip has aggrieved you, but I consider the writing of such things as part of a larger process for me. It’s essentially a purge. I’m committing to page all the stuff that needs to be put there, much as you do with your own works. As such, while I do regret the affront you legitimately feel, I can in no way apologise for the substance of what I’m producing. I stand behind what I’m saying, even though it may not seem very fair or even-handed at times.

I do appreciate your interest in what I draw though, and that you’re willing to challenge me on anything I might say (or even how I say it). I think it helps to keep me somewhat honest with myself about my motives in all of this.

              1. I’ve been trying to figure out how to say this in the fewest words possible. I’m not a woman of few words.

I have heard your response. It’s justified and well restrained for someone who was written a stinging review. My comment was not well thought out, it was an emotional response. I didn’t think about how my words would land. It was a personal attack with some rejection thrown in. It was completely uncalled for.

I had no right to challenge your authenticity. If someone had said about my art or entries what I said to you, I would have been deeply hurt. I would have rolled over in bed mad and pained.

                Tony, I’m really sorry….again.

                1. Faith, the thing I appreciate about you is that you have always been authentic in your communications with me. I value that. So, yes, while I am grateful for your apology, I do hope that you’ll continue be just as authentic in future. At least you care about what it is you’re saying. I will always respect that. 🙂
