A Compilation

  1. This was amazing! The fact that you could pack so much into the gift of a mix-tape/mix-CD was incredible. And at the end, I was a little horrified, stunned, and strangely heartbroken all at once – And I say “strangely” here because I didn’t ever think “mix-tape” and “heartbreaking” would ever occur to me in the same [emotional range of a] sentence.

    1. I know how you feel. I was completely blown away by Mark’s script when I first read it. I knew from the outset that I simply HAD to draw it and bring it to life even more! Thank you for reading. I appreciate your support! 😀

  2. A vivid and moving story, sad to see how the father’s envy got in the way of enjoying the gift. It reminds me of the Buddhist teaching that by simply praising and enjoying another’s virtue allows you to share in their merits. You and Tati are a fine pair of artists!

  3. Why oh why have I waited so long to look at your work, Tony?! An amazing artist, a funny guy, an astute observer of people and an all round supporter of all that is good in the world (aka my blog). Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Is it time for dinner yet?

      1. Let’s see – the 12 was Sunday so it must have been Chinese for dinner. Monday was Italian, Tuesday was Indian and today? Still waiting for dinner to come around. Hey ho – life!
I feel rather compelled to ask you what’s for dinner too, now. 🙂

  4. A lovely strip, really nice colourwork but the story makes me very sad…I’ve made many a mix tape and considering the thought, care and love that gets poured into them, it takes an incorrigible bustard to throw it out of a moving car! Nice playlist..I’ll give it a try and let you know what I think!

    1. Yes, it kinda makes me sad too when I think of all the mix tapes I’ve made through the years that no one will ever listen to. Perhaps they all got thrown away as well. Probably for the best that I’ll never know.

My mind jolted me to this Ted talk

  6. Can they invent better words than ‘excellent’ ‘good’ ‘really good’ ‘wow’ and ‘amazing’ because I feel all those put together and tied around your neck would not come close to expressing the admiration, exaultation and adoration I have for your work and your mind my friend T.

  7. Great work Tony. The crazy fool! Why didn’t he listen? Man oh man, some people just throw away great opportunities, who knows where, or what it may have led to. Keep ’em coming mate.

    1. Thanks so much, Dave! Yeah, some people just never quite realise what they could have had. But then again, maybe he really didn’t want her at all, which is sad for her. Sad either way really. 😦

  8. What?! Why did he toss it? –because he imagines that her efforts in making the CD must have paled next to what he remembers of his own efforts in making the Cassette tapes?

So saddened by his decision. 😦

    1. It’s hard to know what’s going on in the minds of others half the time, so your guess is as good as mine, Gregory. I really like your take on his motivation actually. Thanks for reading as always, my friend! 😀

      1. If I had to guess, I’d say that he spends too much time in his head, insulated by a wall of fatalistic, pessimistic, self-punishing imaginings, and that it is only there that he entertains a possibility for something new before it sours in his mind and he sabotages it in practice.

But I don’t know the guy, so I might be wrong. 😀

  9. I enjoyed your compilation of words, art and music. Tony, your talents shine on brightly. I feel sorry for Cheryl… she poured her heart out in creating that mix. Too bad CDs are not shaped like boomerangs.

Thanks for the playlist, too. I guess there’s still hope for me… I’m familiar with over half of your featured 21 recording artists / groups. I’ll be checking out the rest at YouTube.

  10. Love the way it landed at her feet.
Question – how do you come up with the storyline? Do you start writing as a short story and just write what comes to you? I guess what I’m asking is, how did you get from her creating the CD to it landing in front of her feet?

I love the way you have such complex situations. There’s more going on than just the words. These are jam packed with details. You do such incredible work.

  11. Oh! I don’t understand why? What motivated him NOT to listen?
Sixth-last paragraph: “…still has it to do”? (clunky) …what about: “…still has to do it”?
Beautiful art, though, Tony: and it brought back memories of tapes that I have unleashed unto the world. And had unleashed unto me. It’s how I discovered Cat Stevens and Roxy Music…

    1. I don’t think we’ll ever know. People don’t always make sense I suppose. Ha ha! And, yeah, I made quite a few compilations back in the day myself. Like you, I also had a few unleashed on me too. Some of my favourite bands are that now because of someone’s recommendation. It’s an awesome thing really. 🙂

  12. Oh Tony, the dread that approached me almost right from the very beginning. That is so beautifully achieved. So much damn good work, visually, lyrically. People need to pay you for this. Really.

      1. Thanks Tony! I haven’t heard all these songs, the ones I have I like so I should check the others out. I did open in the larger window but my eyes aren’t so awesome and it has been so grey outside so the windows aren’t giving me that extra dose of light I need.
